Man Made Monsters by Alejandro Montero Bravo.
This large-scale sculptural installation by Swedish artist Alejandro Montero Bravo explored how pop culture and history have portrayed bold femininity and feminine sexuality as villainous traits. It focused on how aesthetics has been used to control who gets to be feminine, shaping our self-expression and shaming those who break gendered rules. The exhibition was split over two levels, the basement gallery space being transformed into the lair of a seductive monster.
The brief was to create the sound design for this space, making it seductive, but at the same time dangerous and eerie. An existing song was to be used as the base but was to be abstracted, making it feel like a persistent dream-like swirling of a siren’s deadly chanting. I achieved this by first separating and removing some of the original songs’ layers and treating each remaining layer with various sonic effects. I then added additional layers which I recorded in my studio, giving an overall mystical and disorienting effect. I also advised and assisted in dealing with considerations required when working with copyrighted material.
